Why replace or service smoke alarms?

The simple answer is that they don't have an unlimited life span. The Indiana State Fire Marshal recommends the following to ensure proper function of smoke alarms:

1. Test your smoke alarms every month.

2. Replace batteries in your smoke alarms twice a year.

3. Replace smoke alarms every 8-10 years.
